Philip Levine MAYOR OFFICE OF THE MIAMI BEACH MAYOR

Philip Levine
MAYOR
OFFICE OF THE MIAMI BEACH MAYOR
Dear Friends & Neighbors,

Over the past few days we have worked around the clock to prepare for the biggest Atlantic hurricane on record, one that not only threatens lives but peoples' livelihoods. This 'nuclear hurricane' is bigger, stronger and more unrelenting than anything we've ever seen.

We anticipate extreme flooding, high storm surge, flooding, and potential tornadoes. Tropical Storm conditions are anticipated through Monday.

I hope by now everyone is prepared. Final preparations to protect life and property should be completed tonight. Please take final shelter by early Saturday morning. Once wind speeds hit 40 miles per hour, our first responders will no longer be dispatched for rescues due to dangerous weather conditions.

The causeways will remain open to vehicular traffic; however I urge you to stay put in a safe place. Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, the drawbridge will remain in the lock-down position so that boats may not pass.

On behalf of myself and our entire City of Miami Beach government, we are with you now and we will be with you after the storm. Miami Beach will rise above, and together, we will rise above Hurricane Irma.

Stay calm and stay safe,

Mayor Philip Levine

Hurricane Season: Plan and Prepare
The 2017 hurricane season officially began on June 1 and runs through November 30.
Forecasters at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center say that the Atlantic could see another above-normal hurricane season this year. According to their predictions, there will be a 70 percent likelihood of 11 to 17 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 2 to 4 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5; winds of 111 mph or higher). An average season produces 12 named storms of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes.

The City of Miami Beach wants to ensure the safety of all of its residents and visitors, and urges everyone to have a hurricane plan. The city is prepared - are you?

Download the 2017 Miami Beach Hurricane Guide for tips on how to stay safe this hurricane season, visit our hurricane webpage and watch our hurricane special below.
