Here in City Hall, I'm working hard to ensure that Noah and all of Miami Beach's children have access to fun play spaces, safe streets, and a quality education. Florida-Friendly Landscaping What began as a quest to reduce harmful pesticide, fertilizer, and water use on City-owned properties has taken an interesting turn. City Hall will soon serve as a premiere demonstration site for Florida-friendly landscaping! Florida-friendly plants are salt and drought tolerant and require little maintenance, so gardeners don't have to depend on harmful herbicides and pesticides. The future landscaping around City Hall will also include informational boards, so both children and homeowners can learn about which native plants can be used to better protect our environment and waterfront. Florida-Friendly Landscaping Another (FUN) Way to Get Around! Residents have been asking for a different way to get around congested streets for some time. That is why our City has officially launched a water taxi pilot program that will enable residents to get to the mainland without having to sit in bumper to bumper traffic! There is even space for passengers to bring their bicycles along for the scenic trip across the bay. The more transportation alternatives, the more we can mitigate congestion. Water Taxi Miami Ride with Ricky @ SoulCycle We took a slight detour from our regularly scheduled community runs to bring residents together for the first ever "Ride with Ricky" at SoulCycle. We had a great evening getting to know some new faces who are interested in getting involved in and around the neighborhood. A big thanks to SoulCycle for hosting and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle throughout our communtiy. We hope you can join us on the next ride! SoulCycle The Future of Parking Garages Self-driving vehicles are right around the corner. When cars gain full autonomy and are implemented for ride-sharing services, cars will no longer remain idle 95% of the time. In the near future, the need for parking will greatly decrease and garages will either be torn down or repurposed. Our City is planning ahead, which is why we are building garages to meet the needs of the present while taking into account the needs of the future. Our plan is to repurpose our garages as affordable and workforce housing so our residents can comfortably live on the beach. Click below to read more from the Miami New Times. Miami Beach Convention Center Renovation & Expansion Project February, 2017

Construction Alert What's New: Saturday, February 4, 2017,  the contractor will be receiving the last of five (5) large deliveries to the Convention Center site at approximately 11:00 a.m. The tower will be delivered via 12 foot by 78 foot long trucks escorted by the Miami Beach Police Department (MBPD). The MBPD motor unit will cover the escort in its entirety within the City limits.   The delivery route is as follows: I-95 to SR 112/I-195 (Julia Tuttle Causeway) to Alton Road to Michigan Avenue to Dade Boulevard to Meridian Avenue to 19thStreet. Please drive with caution and obey all signs.  On Monday, February 6, there will be a temporary closure on Washington Avenue between 17 Street and 18 Street, in order for the Public Works Department to perform drainage work. All northbound traffic will be detoured at 17 Street and southbound traffic will be detoured at 18 Street. Police and flagmen will be directing traffic. This work will begin at 9 a.m. and last approximately four (4) hours. The road should reopen by 1 p.m.  Ongoing Work:  All events are suspended through May 2017 while work is underway. Expect the following activities:  The contractor continues to close the sidewalk along Convention Center Drive adjacent to City Hall, in order to perform work safely. The sidewalk will open and close intermittently throughout construction. Access to City Hall will always be maintained from from 17th Street and 18th Street. The contractor has implemented dust control measures to minimize impacts to the community.  Full closure of Convention Center Drive from 17 Street to Dade Boulevard. Motorists can access the parking garage from 18 Street and Meridian Avenue. 19 Street remains closed between Meridian Avenue and Convention Center Drive. Access to the Botanical Gardens and Holocaust Memorial parking lot and entrance will be maintained at all times via Meridian Avenue. Traffic shifts will occur along Washington Avenue between Dade Boulevard and 17 Street. Pedestrians are advised to use the sidewalk on the east side of the road. One southbound travel lane will remain open between Dade Boulevard and 17 Street.  One northbound travel lane will remain open between 17 Street and 20 Street. Northbound traffic will be detoured at 20 Street. Concrete pours continue on the north end of the building adjacent to Washington Avenue in preparation for the future parking lot entrance ramp. Due to the high volume of concrete and project related material being used, the contractor is required to complete this work during off peak hours between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. The contractor has implemented noise reduction measures to minimize the impact to the community. FPL continues utility work along 21 Street between Washington and Park avenues. The road remains closed except for local traffic via Park Avenue only. Detour signs for motorists are posted throughout the area. All pedestrians are directed to use the north sidewalk of Dade Boulevard between Washington Avenue and Convention Center Drive, while the sidewalk on the south side (along Collins Canal) remains closed. General Construction Work Hours: General work hours on this project are from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Extended work hours and weekend work is approved in order to expedite the construction schedules.  Other Construction Activities in the area: Public Works drainage improvements continue along Washington Avenue between 17 Street and 18 Street adjacent to The Fillmore. Traffic is reduced to one northbound and southbound lane in this area.
