City of Miami Beach Appoints New Police Chief and Deputy Chief

Miami Beach Police Chief Richard Clements, Commissioner Micky Steinberg and Deputy Chief Wayne Jones.
The Miami Beach City Commission unanimously appointed Richard Clements as the 20th police chief of the Miami Beach Police Department. Chief Clements has been with the department for the entirety of his law enforcement career that began in 1990, last serving in the capacity of Deputy Chief for the past three years. 
Clements holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Utah, and has received professional certificates from Northwestern University, Boston University and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Academy. He also served as a sniper on the department’s SWAT team for 16 years.  
Known for his passion and vocation, Clements’ family is rooted in service, with three generations of MBPD officers including his father and son.
Wayne A. Jones is the City’s newly appointed Deputy Police Chief. Jones has served with the Department since 1996. During his tenure, he has achieved success in a variety of capacities and positions of rank including: patrol and special operations, community affairs, internal affairs, and criminal investigations. Most recently, he was assigned as Major of the Criminal Investigations Division where he was oversaw all investigations.
Jones is a licensed pilot who holds an Associate of Science Degree in Aviation from Miami-Dade College, and a dual Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration and Political Science from Florida Memorial University. He also earned a graduate degree in Public Administration from Florida International University and is a 2003 graduate of the Miami Fellows Initiative, a two year post graduate leadership program.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday, July 1 at City Hall.

A free, dedicated shuttle service will operate from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. between the 42 Street garage (stop located along southbound Sheridan Avenue north of 41 Street) and the North Beach Bandshell (stop located at Collins Avenue and 73 Street), departing every 30 minutes. In addition, attendees can use the free citywide trolley service operating from 6 AM to midnight. Service frequency for the trolleys is 15 to 20 minutes.

In celebration of Parks and Recreation Month, the City of Miami Beach is hosting exciting events throughout the month of July for the entire family – even your pooch. The schedule of events is as follows:

Saturday, July 6 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Show off your dog’s incredible talents in the costume or best trick contest. Make a memory with your pup at the photo booth and let your best friend refresh at the doggie pool and splash pad. Enjoy a day of music, giveaways, free ice cream and more.

Parents and children under the age of 4 are invited to enjoy a morning of summer fun filled with music, games, refreshments and more.

Kayak Fun Day
Saturday, July 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Kayak Launch, West of Dickens Avenue and North of 73 Street
$20 for a double kayak rental
Explore Biscayne Bay from a paddler’s perspective and get a chance to experience nature up close. Kayaks are limited and usage time will vary depending on participation. Two-hour max reservation and age restrictions apply (5 & up). Life jacket must be worn at all times and children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Pre-registration is mandatory and can be done online by clicking here.
 

Free On-Demand Transit Service

The Transportation Department is pleased to announce the City’s partnership with Freebee to provide free on-demand transit service for our residents, visitors, and workforce within a designated Mid-Beach service area. The four month pilot program was launched on May 31 and will end on September 30.
