Back to top 2.  IRS helps workers, businesses with new Gig Economy Tax Center The gig economy is any activity where people earn income providing on-demand work, services or goods. Often, it’s through a digital platform like an app or website. The IRS has launched a new Gig Economy Tax Center on IRS.gov. There, digital platforms and businesses will find information on classifying workers, reporting payments, and filing taxes for a digital marketplace or business. Workers within the gig economy will find helpful tips and essential forms to accurately manage their taxes. Back to top 3.  New year, new Standard Mileage Rates The IRS today issued the 2020 optional standard mileage rates (PDF) used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. Beginning on Jan. 1, 2020, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be: 57.5 cents per mile driven for business use, down one half of a cent from the rate for 2019, 17 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, down three cents from the rate for 2019, and 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations. Back to top 5.  Opportunity Zone guidance The IRS recently issued final regulations providing details about investment in qualified opportunity zones (QOZ). The final regulations modified and finalized the proposed regulations issued on Oct. 28, 2018 and May 1, 2019. They provide additional guidance for taxpayers eligible to make an election to temporarily defer the inclusion in gross income of certain eligible gain. Back to top 6.  Regulations regarding publicly held corporations The Treasury Department and the IRS issued proposed regulations to reflect changes from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) on the tax deductibility of officers’ compensation by publicly held corporations. IRS Notice 2018-68 was released on Aug. 21, 2018, providing initial guidance on this deduction limitation.

Census Bureau Releases New Content on 2020Census.gov in 59 Languages JAN. 13, 2020 – The U.S. Census Bureau recently launched an update to 2020census.gov that includes content in 59 languages, including language assistance guides and videos that explain how to complete the 2020 Census questionnaire online, by phone, or by mail when it becomes available in mid-March. People can respond to the census online and by phone in 13 languages. The expansive site includes in-depth information in both English and Spanish. U.S. Census Bureau to Unveil 2020 Census Advertising and Outreach Campaign The U.S. Census Bureau will unveil its comprehensive national advertising and outreach campaign for the 2020 Census – more than 1,000 advertisements have been developed to reach audiences across the country that will be shared publicly for the first time at the preview event. Watch Live The event will show the Census Bureau’s commitment to reaching all audiences, including those that are hard-to-count, with advertisements in English and 12 other languages, and to encourage participation in the 2020 Census. The event will also highlight the Census Bureau’s efforts to recruit temporary, part-time census takers nationwide for the 2020 Census. Tennessee Street Leon County Government and the City of Tallahassee invite citizens to celebrate Arbor Day by planting trees at Martha Wellman Park, 5317 W. Tennessee Street, on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 9 a.m. This event is a fun opportunity for volunteers to reconnect with the earth while also strengthening the park’s habitat for the hundreds of native and migratory species that call Tallahassee-Leon County home, even if only for a season. This year, volunteers will help plant a diverse mix of native and pollinator species, including Profusion and Robinson Crabapple trees, pond cypress, eastern red cedar, serviceberry and American beech. Leon County and the City of Tallahassee have a long history of celebrating Arbor Day. Last year, hundreds of trees and shrubs were planted by volunteers of all ages at the City’s Lake Elberta Park. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather and bring gloves, shovels, drinking water and friends. The event will take place rain or shine. No registration is necessary. Two eastbound lanes and the sidewalk on SR 826 / Sunny Isles Blvd. at Collins Avenue will be closed beginning at 9:00 pm on Saturday, January 11 until 5:00 am on Sunday, January 12, 2020. In order to complete this work and minimize the impact on traffic, this same lane closure will also occur from 9:00 pm on Thursday, January 16 until 5:00 am Friday, January 17, 2020. Heavy traffic congestion may occur  during these lane closures. Travelers may experience delays during this time.
