Summer Youth Programs June - August, 2019 The City of Sunny Isles Beach offers a variety of youth programs and activities this summer. Students can improve their flexibility and coordination with tumbling, take piano lessons, sharpen your strategic thinking with chess or get outside and have some fun in the sun with beach volleyball. Registration is currently open to everyone. Register at Pelican Community Park, 18115 North Bay Road. Check out our featured youth programs! Beach Volleyball (ages 14 - 17)   Dates: June 17 - July 31 (no class on 7/8 & 7/10) Day: Monday, Wednesday Time: 6:00 - 7:15 pm Location: Samson Oceanfront Park Fee: Resident $60 Non-Resident $90 Take your game to the beach. Perfect your volleyball skills on the sand. Chess Club Beginner (ages 6 - 12)   Dates: June 15 - August 3 Day: Saturday Time: 9:00 - 10:00 am Location: Pelican Community Park Fee: Member $110 Non-Member $165 Participants can learn the basics of chess and compete with other children. Drop-In Volleyball (ages 7 - 14)   Dates*: June 18 - August 1 Days: Tuesday, Thursday Time: 7:30 - 9:00 pm Location: PCP Gymnasium Fee: Members Free Only open to members of Pelican Community Park. Free, open volleyball play for members of Pelican Community Park.   Hip Hop Dance (ages 5 - 12)   Dates: Ongoing Days: Monday, Friday Time: 6:00 - 7:00 pm, ages 5-8 7:05 - 8:05 pm, ages 9-12 Location: Pelican Community Park Fee: Member $100 Non-Member $150 Learn hip-hop choreography in a fun, engaging and exciting environment. Students will learn and understand rhythm and musical beats while dancing to the latest music. Karate (ages 5 - 14)   Dates*: Ongoing Day: Tuesday, Thursday Times: 6:00 - 6:55 pm, ages 5-7 7:00 - 7:55 pm, ages 8-14 8:00 - 8:55 pm, ages 14+ Day: Saturday Times: 11:00 am-Noon, ages 5-14 12:15 - 1:15 pm, ages 14+ Location: Pelican Community Park Fee monthly: Member $75 Non-Member $110 Group assignments are based on skill level as determined by instructor. Music Together (ages 1 - 5)   Dates: July 3 - August 21 Days: Wednesday Time: 9:00 - 9:45 am Location: Pelican Community Park Fee: Resident $110 Non-Resident $165 Music Together is a research-based family music and movement class for children and the grown-ups who care for them. MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR Recently, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Park Service had the privilege of being selected as a finalist for the National Gold Medal. The award is presented by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association. The Florida Park Service is the only three-time winner of the Gold Medal, and we are working to win a fourth. Being selected as a finalist recognizes the terrific work of our staff, volunteers and partners. Together, we make sure visitors can have transformative experiences, even as we protect the best of Florida’s natural and cultural resources. With over 800,000 acres, including 100 miles of beaches, the Florida Park Service has a proud legacy of leading conservation and recreation in Florida. This legacy is built on the way the Park Service connects with people, engages with communities and adapts to emerging needs. You can watch our new video to see some of the great things happening in Florida State Parks. Founded in 1965, the Gold Medal Awards program honors communities in the United States for excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism and environmental stewardship. The awards are separated into five classes based on population, one class for armed forces recreation, and one class for state park systems that is awarded on odd numbered years Nationally, we are happy to congratulate our fellow finalists, Tennessee State Parks, Maryland State Parks and Washington State Parks. In Florida, we congratulate the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department and Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Milton. They are competing in the 150,000 to 400,000 population class and the armed forces recreation class, respectively. We thank our visitors, staff, volunteers and partners for helping to make Florida State Parks one of the best park systems in the country.   Eric Draper FEATURED STORIES Taking on Earleaf Acacia Amid the open pine flatwoods at Savannas Preserve State Park stood a dense thicket of earleaf acacia, an invasive species introduced from the islands of Oceania as a landscape plant. Turtle Nesting Season Begins The Florida Park Service takes an active role in protecting sea turtle nests and nesting habitat. As nesting season gets into full swing, park staff, volunteers and biologists are prepared to monitor nests and keep them safe.
