FBI ARRESTA A DOS ALCALDES DEL SUR DE FLORIDA POR CORRUPCION

FBI arresta a dos alcaldes del sur de Florida por corrupción 

 El Buró Federal de Investigaciones (FBI) de Estados Unidos arrestó hoy a dos alcaldes de ciudades del Sur de Florida bajo cargos relacionados con corrupción, informó una televisora local. El alcalde de la ciudad de Sweetwater, Manuel Maroño, y el de Miami Lakes, Michael Pizzi, fueron detenidos por agentes de la policía federal en sus oficinas la mañana de este martes, reportó el canal local CBS-4. Se esperaba que ambos comparecieran en una corte federal la tarde del martes. Pizzi se encuentra en su segundo término como alcalde. Fue elegido en 2008 y es un abogado que trabajó para una prominente firma de letrados en el sur de Florida. Maroño, miembro de la Comisión de Sweetwater desde 1995, fue elegido como alcalde en 2003. Actualmente ocupa el cargo de presidente de la Liga de Ciudades de la Florida, que tiene una membresía de más de 400 ciudades, municipios y villas de todo el estado. En el 2011 Maroño desempeñó un papel importante en el equipo de transición del gobernador Rick Scott. El gobernador se mostró decepcionado y dijo que ambos serían suspendidos de su cargos, de acuerdo con la CBS. La oficina de la Fiscalía Federal del sur de Florida se disponía a hacer públicos los cargos contra ambos servidores públicos.

En un duro golpe que sorprendió a la casta política de Miami-Dade, agentes federales arrestaron el martes a los alcaldes de Sweetwater, Manuel Maroño, y de Miami Lakes, Michael Pizzi, acusándolos de aceptar miles de dólares en sobornos a cambio de presuntas subvenciones federales para sus ciudades que en realidad eran parte de una operación encubierta del FBI para atrapar a funcionarios locales corruptos.

Maroño, de 41 años, y Pizzi, de 51, comparecieron esposados y vistiendo camisetas deportivas ante una jueza en el tribunal federal del downtown y, separadamente, dijeron que entendían las acusaciones en su contra. No se declararon ni culpables ni inocentes porque eso ocurrirá el 27 de agosto durante una audiencia donde serán instruidos de cargos específicos.

Ambos acusados salieron libres luego de pagar las fianzas de $250,000 para Maroño y $100,000 para Pizzi. Los alcaldes accedieron a entregar sus pasaportes y otros documentos de viaje a las autoridades federales.

El caso también involucra a dos conocidos cabilderos: Jorge Forte, de 41 años, y Richard Candia, de 49. Según los fiscales federales, ambos se entregarían a las autoridades este miércoles.

A su salida de la sede federal, Maroño dijo brevemente a los medios: “Solo tengo algo que decir: mi ciudad no tiene nada que ver con esto. No he hecho nada incorrecto. Vamos a seguir adelante”.

La abogada de Pizzi, Amanda Maxwell, dijo que su cliente es un hombre público que iniciará una batalla legal para limpiar su imagen.

“A Michael Pizzi lo conocemos como abogado, funcionario público y hombre de integridad”, dijo Maxwell. “Hoy comienza su lucha por su vindicación”.

Las acusaciones contra Maroño y Pizzi de conspirar con la intención de extorsionar, causaron revuelo entre los círculos políticos del condado. El gobernador Rick Scott anunció la tarde del martes la suspensión de ambos alcaldes.

Los vicealcaldes de Sweetwater, José M. Díaz, y de Miami Lakes, Ceasar Mestre, asumieron el martes las riendas de sus respectivas ciudades.

“Estamos sorprendidos y tristes por esta situación”, dijo Díaz. “Pero tenemos que seguir adelante, trabajando”.

Por su parte Mestre llamó a los ciudadanos de Miami Lakes a mantener la calma.

“Yo voy a ser el alcalde interino y quiero decirles a los vecinos que lo que ha pasado no va a afectar los servicios que ofrecemos a la comunidad”, manifestó Mestre. “Estamos en medio de la elaboración del presupuesto y vamos a seguir haciendo todo lo mejor para Miami Lakes”.

El martes Mestre fue entrevistado por agentes del FBI que llegaron a la sede municipal de Miami Lakes. Los agentes se retiraron alrededor de las 3 p.m. sin realizar comentarios.

“Todo esto nos ha tomado por sorpresa. Es una situación difícil y triste, en especial para la familia [de Pizzi].”, dijo Mestre. “Hay que recordar que uno es inocente hasta que se demuestre lo contrario”.

La madre de Maroño y comisionada de Sweetwater, Isolina Maroño, defendió a su hijo en breves comentarios a la prensa.

“El va a aclarar las cosas y saldrá bien de todo esto”, dijo Isolina Maroño. “Solo puedo decir que todo de lo que están acusando a mi hijo es mentira, él no hizo nada”.

FALLECE BETTY PINO

Beatriz Pino o Betty Pino,  nació en Ancón -Ecuador. A temprana edad se trasladó a Quito, donde se graduó como Bachiller y Secretaria Ejecutiva. A los 14 años se vinculó como operadora a la radio quiteña, pero su paso allí fue efímero, pues el destino la llevó más tarde a Estados Unidos, donde logró su sueño: Convertirse en una figura radial internacional.  A Betty Pino, como se le conoce en el ambiente artístico, se le ha llamado en España y Latinoamérica "La Gurú " del mundo del disco. Porque melodía que vaticina como éxito, se convierte en Hit musical.

Esta mujer trajo a Miami, aparte de una maleta llena de ilusiones, música y recuerdos, el precioso don de la vida entre su vientre. Llegar arriba no fue fácil. Betty fue mucama de un hoptel de lujo, empacadora de frutas, dependiente en la cafetería de un importante almacén por departamentos, recepcionista y contadora.En 1974, con el nacimiento de la que fuera su casa por muchos años, la estación FM-92, nace también la primera Disc-Jockey mujer del Sur de la Florida. Betty Pino se consagra entonces como la voz radial femenina más importante, convirtiendo a la ciudad en trampolín obligado de los artistas de habla hispana.De aquí en adelante, su incansable trabajo y su desmedido amor por la radio y la musica, la llevan a crear los famosos premios "Aplauso 92", y la hacen merecedora de una serie de homenajes y premios entre los que se destacan: Miami,  1991 homenaje de Bienvenida a la radio, transmitido por la Cadena Univisión. Miami 1993, Billboard Magazine, premio a La Personalidad Radial Latina del año en Estados Unidos, España, 1986, homenaje de los más grandes artistas españoles. República Dominicana, 1995, premio Cassandra a la Mejor Personalidad Internacional de la Radio. Miami, 1996, la comunidad del Sur de la Florida le otorga una Estrella en el paseo de las estrellas el la Calle 8. Miami, 1997, premio al Mejor Formato corto de un Programa de Noticias artísticas por la South Florida A.I.R.  Ecuador, 1997 Homenaje por su trabajo radial en el exterior. El Gobierno y altas personalidades de la vida nacional, rinden tributo a la ecuatoriana que enarbola el nombre de la patria.

Hoy sigue vinculada exitosamente a los medios de comunicación. Actualmente trabaja en la radio Amor 107.5 en Miami, Florida, de 10am a 3pm, de lunes a viernes. Y como ustedes comprobarán ha incursionado tambien en el mundo de la cibernética.

La finalidad es poder designar a dos miembros principales y a dos miembros suplentes de nuestro nucleo, como representantes para la elección de la Secretaria Ejecutiva de la MUD-VENEX Miami, en su primera asamblea general a celebrarse el 17 de agosto del presente año.
